1.arrive at (a place) 到達
He arrived at my house just at supper time.
他剛好在晚餐時間抵達我家。
2.arrive in (city, country) 到達
They arrived in New York last Tuesday.
他們上周二抵達紐約。
3.ask about詢問
We asked about the condition of the roads between there and the Capital.
我們詢問從首都到那裡的路況。
4.break (someone) of (some) habit 戒掉習慣
I’m trying to break myself of the habit of biting my nails when I’m nervous.
我試著戒掉緊張時會咬指甲的這個壞習慣。
5.count on指望（某人）
You can always count on Michael in a crisis.
在危急關頭你總能依靠Michael。
6.differ from 不同於
He differs from his brother in both his appearance and his manner.
他的外表和禮貌都和他的兄弟不同。
7.guard against防止；防範
Regular exercise helps guard against heart disease.
經常鍛煉有助於預防心臟病。
8.inform against（向警方）告發（某人）
I don’t like to inform against anybody, but it’s my duty to report this to the authorities.

9.inquire into調查，查究；查問
When the authorities inquired into his background, they found he had a criminal record.

10.insist on 堅持

11.look at看著

12.look alike看起像很像

13.prevent (someone/thing) from (something) 預防
I tried to prevent the dog from following me, but it was no use.

14.refrain from避免；忍住；節制
We refrained from talking until we knew that it was safe.
我們緘默不語，直到確定安全了才開始說話。
15.reply to回復
I try to reply to letters the day I receive them.
我儘量在收到信的當天就回信。
16.result from 因… 而導致
Most of my difficulties resulted from my lack of money.
我大部分的困難都因缺錢而導致。
17.result in導致
His bad behaviour resulted in his losing weekend privileged for a month.
他的偏差行為導致他一個月都沒有假日特權。
18.rob of搶劫；剝奪
A last-minute injury robbed me of my place on the team.
我在緊要關頭受了傷，失去了在球隊中的位置。
They robbed the company of $2 million.

19.surrender to投降、屈服
I finally surrendered to temptation, and ate the last piece of chocolate.
我最後還是抵擋不住誘惑，吃掉剩下的最後一塊巧克力
20.sympathize with支持
I sympathize with the general aims of the organization, but on this particular issue I disagree.

21.take advantage of佔…的便宜；欺騙
I think she takes advantage of his good nature.

22.yearn for渴望，切盼，渴求
Despite his great commercial success he still yearns for critical approval.
儘管他在商場非常成功，但還是渴望得到評論家的認可。
